On our first page will be found some very interesting figures pertaining to the equipment of our five contingents for South Africa, also an item of interest headed " The Race for the youth* African Market." Sporting news appears on our fourth page. To enable us to do justice to the exceptionally fine exhibits of dairy produce, machinery, etc., we have beau compelled, owing to want of space, to hold over till tomorrow this portion of our report of the. Agricultural Show. St. Mary's Church festival services will be held on Sunday next. The Rev. A, M. Bradbury, who has lately taken charge of Okato, will preach in the morning, and the Kev. F. A. Bennett, the Maori Missioner, in the evening. In the afternoon a service for children and parents will bo conducted by the Kev. F. G. Evans. The offertory collections for the day will be devoted to the liquidation of the parochial debts.
The Stratford Farmers' Co-operative Association carried oil! the first pri/,e and Messrs. Lovell and Christmas' 75 guinea trophy for best keg o£ factory batter at the Show on Thursday. The Makutawa Company secured the Society's trophy. The first of the sports meetings of the Canterbury Primary Schools Association came off at Lancaster Park on Thursday, and proved very successful.
A claim for damages for slander is occupying the attention of the Supreme Court at Ohristchurch. Plaintiff is atailoress.
Captain Kichard Kelley, who had been for 25 years in the service of the Shaw, Savill Company, died on the voyage out lrom Liverpool, while in command of the Westland.
To-day is St. Andrew's Day. There will be a celebration of Holy Communion in St. Mary's Church at 11 o'clock. A collection will be made in aid of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The following trains leave New Plymouth station to-day for the Breakwater, connecting with steamers mentioned belojr, as f0110w:—5.45 a.m., Mapourika(from isorth); 8 a.m., Kotoiti (from Souf.h); 2.30 p.m., Mapourika (for South); 9.30 pni., Kotoiti (for North). A passenger-car will be attached to the goods train, leaving New Plymouth for the Breakwater, about 3 p.m.
Miss Burnett has withdrawn her offer to present a peal of chiming bells to Wanganui, owing to the Council refusing both of the sites selected by her. The trial of Mrs. S'ogo, for the murder of h«r husband, will be continued to-day at Dunedin. Some new points in relation to the knife were brought out yesterday. The disease is described as peripheral leuritis, and the symptoms are like berri)erri fever. A chemist is unable to discover he cause. The sugar substitute is suspected.
