It is quite clear from the correspondence that has appeared in these columns and those of our loeal contemporary, that the "Public Health Act" was not passed before it was required, and it is to be hoped that one of the first things the Public Health Department will do will be to give definite instructions to Stock Inspeotors in reference to the destruction of all stock condemned as diseased. All such stock should be at once not only killed where found, but burned on the spot. The practice of driving these animals to a common slaughtering place cannot be too severely condemned, and is, no doubt, one of the causes why the vigorous steps taken in this district have not resulted in the disease being already stamped out. The' practice of burying the carcases of the animals destroyed should in no case be allowed. Only a short time back, wo were informed, that dogs and pigs were feeding on the carcase of a beast so buried and dragging portions of it ail over the field. | No doubt, as the heads of the Department have only just been gazetted, some little time will elapse before everything is in working order, but, in the meantime, Stock Inspectors and the 1 police should keep a sharp look-out and prosecute in every case where the circumstances warrant it. Nicety-nine settlers may be doing all in their power to preserve the health and cleanliness of the district, and the carelessness of one render all their efforts abortive,
