TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Board met on Monday, i Present: Messrs.McAllum(Chairman), ( Adlam, Wade, Allsworth, Mackay, \ Kennedy, and Hignett, c The Chairman of tKo Kent Road E Committee, forwarded an application , from Miss D. Taylor for a week's leave j of absence, bat as the leave had been | taken before the application nag received, he had no recommendation to , make. He suggested that the regula- ] tions should be observed. MissTaylor ■ is to be asked for an explanation. -.. The resignations of Miss Gunn, of Oakura, and Mrs. Moore of Koru, were accepted, and the necessary steps are tc be taken i to fill the vacancies. Miss Gunn is to be,informed that a transfei cannot be arranged, but she is at liberty to apply for any vacancy. Mr. Vosper, sewing teacher at Stan ley Road, wrote relative to the delaj in the receipt of the sewing. Mr. R W. Hill, the teacher, is to be asked foi an explanation. Mr.. James Melville's request to b< put on the list of applicants for puptr teachership was complied with, but the Board were unable to allow him to go on at: Stratford a? a cadet. The Stratford Committee asked that a, layman be appointed as supervisor at the High School examination, but the Board saw no reason for departing from ! its usual custom. The question of re- ; pairs to the head teacher's residence was referred to Messrs. Mackay and Kennedy, to report upon. 1 The Kent Road Committee reported : that all the schools in their district had been given a holiday on November Bth, i for the purpose of celebrating the Brit--1 ish success in ; South Africa. The action ; of the Committee was approved. A copy of the School Commissioners i letter relative to the school site at i Pohokura offered by Mr. McOluggage, ', is to be sent to the Minister of Educa- | tion with a visw of obtaining hisas- . sistance in overcoming the difficulty, i and his urgent attention to the matter is to be asked for, The Ngaire Committee called atten- , tion to the fact that they had not been b receiving revenue since 1897 from the ■ school reserve. The matter was re- ] ferred to the Reserves Committee. b The Fukearuhe Commissioner comi plained of the delay in executing the repairs needed. The letter was referred to the architect with power to act. The Tikorangi Committee offered to 1 cart the timber and lay the floor of the j shelter shed if the Board would find i the material. This was agreed to on s condition that the work is executed to • Mr, Faull's satisfaction, e Mr. Nelson Okey was appointed Comt missianerof Frankley Road School, vice r Mr. J. Veale, who resigned. '< The Warea Committee wrote in reply as to the. cleaning of the school 1 and stated that the school was swept j 1 twice a week in summer, and three h times in winter, at a cost of 6d per i. sweeping, and that if the Board would ■ supply a sufficient number of sixpences, j the school should be swept out as often [1 as the Board wished, but their present, ;. funds would not allow for more work than was now done, The Committee are to be asked if the, revenue derived from entertainments,letc., could not be devoted to cleaning the school.
The School Commissioners forwardod a copy of their solicitor's opinion on the proposal to acquire Poverty Flat for the Central School. He advised that it will require an Act of Parliament to add the land in question to the school, and that the Commissioners cannot therefore aid the Board in any way.
The Chairman and Mr. Allsworth were appointed a committee to wait on the Borough Council relative to acquiring a portion of Poverty Flat. A petition was received from parents of children attending the West Infant Sehool, asking that the school might te made a full standard one. It was referred to the Town School Committee for their opinion. 1 In reply to a petition from settlers at Mangorei, they are to be informed that the Board has used every effort to keep the school open, but that, owing to the small salary, a teacher cannot at present be procured. Also, that the question of removing the school will receive consideration.
Mr. E. King, hon. secretary of the Bell Block Hall, wrote, drawing the Board's attention to the school used for other than school purposes. He stated that it was used by the " church people " for a lantern lecture, when the hall could have been obtained for 4s, aad that Mr. Glegg intended applying for its use for a ratepayers' meeting, in order to force the Hall Committee to accept any price he likod for the use of the hall.—The Committee submitted correspondence which had passed showing that the price for the I use of the hall had been fixed at 10s for lectures and a reduction refused : both to the Rev. F. J. Bennett and Mr. 'Glegg.—-The Board considered the Committee's explanation satisfactory. The Architect was authorised to , attend to the planing of the desks at Ngaire. The Tongaporutu Committee requested the Board to take action rela- ' ive to the state of the school. The matter was considered in Committee, On resuming, it was decided to r: fer the letter to the teacher for his remarks.
The resignation of Mr. D, B. Lattey as teacher of Kaiinate School was provisionally accepted. He is to be asked for a more explicit statement of the reasons for his action.
Tha Architect is to be instructed to have the necessary repair* executed at the Ngaire School. **
The Inspector was authorised to procure 20 desks as designed by him for the Stratford Infant School,
A letter from the Wanganui Education Board was read, suggesting that a circular be sent to the School Committees without delay relative to the Opaku Reserve scholarship scheme, and that a vote on the matter should be taken at the annual meeting of householders,—The letter was referred to the Opaku Reserve Committee with power to act.. Che adjourned annual meeting was leld on Wednesday evening, Mr. F. Joodacro presiding. The report and -j mlanca-sheet, the kttar showing the J werdrafb at £25 (after paying off * several arrears), were adopted. The * •eport stated that the success cf the ' Show was in a great measure due to the '• large number of special prizes offered. c A. committee was appointed to report * m a proposal submitted by the Welt j lington Society to form a New Zealanal - Poultry Association.
