General Clements has cleared the enemy from the Magliesberg Range, capturing 500 cattle. Private Avard, of the New South Wales Lancers, has died of a wound. Commandant - General Botha is moving against Lydenburg, which is strongly held and filled with supplies. The War Office has notified that the order in which troops return from South Africa depends on military exigencies, based upon thj proportion of the various arms required to restore tranquility. KINDRED SPIRITS. (Received 19, 9.31 a.m.) London, October 18. Mr. Michael Davitt and the Nationalists have prepared an address to Mr. Kruger. It expressed sympathy with the heroic stand for liberty made by the Boars, and goes on:—" We humble ourselves with shame through si many Irish being in the ranks of the Boer 1 oppressors, being unable to withdraw. We followed the contest with hopss of your triumph, depressed with anguish upon your reverses by a horde of mercenaries in the pay of coveters of land and gold and haters of independence.

There will ba 140,000 war commemoration medals struck by the Go-1 vernment for distribution among school.-childien at a cost of £12,500. The deoiga has not- yet been definitely decided'upon; buftbere is little doubt as to the sesigifthat will meet with official acceptation.,.. It will be acopper bronze medal of the size of a florin, bearing on the reverse a representation of a mounted trooper in khaki galloping over the veldt, the back ground being a kopje, while above will be the inscription "presented to ohildren attending New Zealand State Schools." On the obverse will be the words "In commemoration of the war in South Africa, 1899-1900, in which 1788 men from New Zealand took pirt." The medals will be struck in the olony. No provision has yet been made for a fastening attachment, and if it. is decided to have one, the present estimated cost will be trebled if not quadrupled,
