GUARDS CLUB BALL.
I The Guards Club havo on many occasions ehown, by their entertainments, t hat they havo considerable organising talent, and, successful as those small gatherings have been, they naturally dwindled into insignificance when compared with the dance which was held at the Drill Hall on Thursday evening. The Hall had been most tastefully and profusely decorated with bunting, the floor, thanks to the invaluable assistance of Mr. J, Revell, commended itself to the most fastidious dancer, the music was supplied by Mr. D. MeKinnon Bain's deservedly famous orchestra, the supper provided by Mr. West, and supplemented by several ladieß, was all that could be desired, and the M.'sO. were indefatigable in attending to their duties, all conducing to a most enjoyable evening. In the large area of the Drill Hall two or three hundred people seem but half the number. There is, however, compensation in this, as not only do the varied tints of the ladies handsome toilettes show to better advantage, but there is the added pleasure of being able to dance in comfort. The scene was decidedly pretty, and Misses Lawson and Humphries, who were responsible for the decorations, deserve much praise for the pleasing effect obtained. Naturally, the uniforms of the Guards prevailed, and the solitary uniform of a member of the Taranaki Hides was conspicuous, although many members of that company were present in plain attire. The Hawera Mounted Rifles were represented by SurgeonCaptain Valintine, Quartermaster-Ser-geant Percival), and several merabars of the corps. There is no doubt that it was a most successful dance, and for this the Club should be grateful to the committee, consisting of Captain Taunton, Sergeant MaoDiarmid, Private A. Humphries, Bugler Ford (M.'sC.), and Corporals Gold water, Treeby, Webster, Nixon, Privates Bayly, Neal, and Black. The duties of secrotary were ably and energetically performed by Col. Sergeant Waldie, and last, but by no means least, the Club have causa to ba greatly indebted to the Ladies Committee, who spared no pains to onsure a perfect success.
