The City of London Volunteers are returning to London on the 27th, There will be a short thanksgiving service at St. Paul's and themes will then immediately disband. One hundred and seventy invalided Colonial soldiers have been in England sine May, owing to financial difficulties through from £25 to £lls of pay due being in arrears. The Lord Mayer arranged for weekly loans from the Discretionary Fund, which included many Australian subscriptions. Lord Uairington is secretary of the committee. A South Afrioaa patrol of forty men, with a Maxim, surprised and engaged four hundred Boers in a running figat, in the direction of Sabie River. The Boers escaped, leaving a number of rifles. A fight occurred between the Boers and the outposts at Bethulie. They wounded four and captured twelve British militiamen. The Boers took the uniforms and then released the | prisoners, A TRAIN UPSET AT KAAPMINDEN. BOERS LAY IN WAIT AND OPEN FIRE. DISASTROUS RESULTS. ALL ABLE-BODIED BRITISHERS ON RAND LIABLE FOR SERVICE.
Reoeived 13, 1.25 a,m. London, October 12, A train at Kaapminden has been upset at a diversion over the Kaap River. Three artillerymen were killed and fifteen injured. Lieut. Haykes had a leg broken, The engine and trucks conveyed the engineer, officers, Captain Paget of the Rifle Brigade and 18 men of the Vlakonfontein garrison to ascertain the nature of the damage along the line. The Boers who laid wait fired. Captain Stewart, of the Rifle Brigade, hearing an attack hastened with 40 men to support Captain Paget. Captain Stewart was killed, and Captain Paget dangerously wounded. Six others were wounded and eleven captured, All able-bodied Britishers on the Rand will be liable for service. Sir A. Milner advises refugees who are not willing for service in the town guard to postpone their return.
