At Timaru, on Wednesday, the S.M. gave jßdgment in the Baster Camp breach o£ contract cases. He held that the defendants were not acting as servants of the Crown, and that there was no defence on that ground, therefore they were liable for their actions. He gave judgment for Reilly in the canteen case for £B6, and for Oudd, the cateror, for £6O. Counsel for defendant said there might be an appeal. In consequence of the increased traffic caused by the dredging industry on the West Coast, the Union Company has re-ananged its time-table so aa to give extra communication, and if necessary the Mapourika will be put on instead of the Wainui. As soon as the quarantine is removed the special per centage between Australia and New Zealand will be abolished, but owing to the increased cost of coal and other necessaries, somewhat higher rates will be charged than before the plague bioke out. The extra cost of coal involves £13,000 per annum. In view of the traffic to Christchurch, there will be a daily service between there and Wellington. 'Frisco mail news states that the plot on the life of King Humbert of Italy was planned in a room at West Hoboken, New York. Every effort is to be made to bring the men concerned to justice; but difficulty is being experienced in the matter owing to the fact that the State has no laws for the punishment of persons plotting against people in Europe. The Italian Government has asked ( the State to pass measures of this nature .without delay. United States are proceeding with the ' construction of G 22-knot cruisers, 9 of the ' protected class ranging in speed from 17 to ■ 22 knots, 4 monitors, 16 torpedo destroyers, ' and 6 Holland sub-marine boats.

The Inglewood fiecord says:—The milk received at the Waiongon'a factory during the 12 months was 1,122,1911b5—44,022,971 lbs of butter-fat. Batter made amounted to 45,4521bs sold, and 3631bs in stock—a total of 45,8161b5. It took an average of 22.991bs (nearly) of milk to make lib of butter; and lib of butter-fat made I.lolb of batter. The average test was 3.9. The credit balance was £lB4 12s lOd.

The Wanganui Chrtmiclo says:—Messrs.' Hatrick and Co.'s excursion to Tangarakau was largely patronised, over 50 persons taking advantage of what proved to be a more than ordinary pleasant excursion. Splendid weather prevailed. The grandeur of the scenery above Pipiriki was a great surprise to everyone, and the skilful way the difficult rapids were negotiated was quite an object lesson in steam-boating. No doubt trips in the near future to Tangarakau will become regular. The record of engagements, etc., of sailors for the year ended June 30th at Wellington largely exceeds the previous year. There were 2903 engagements against 2384, and 2020 discharges against 2166. There were also 140 desertions.

The public debt of the colony, including municipalities,. works out at £62 10s. per head.

The secretary of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce has been advised that the Railway Department propose shortly to delay the Thursday afternoon train to Wanganui till a quarter past four o'clock. The New Zealand Times says:—"The Kiripaka has been supplied with new decks, and her appearance will be improved with new bulwarks of a stable character. The fore and aft bulkheads of the new and 'commodious deckhouse are already in posi--1 tion, and apparently no effort is being spared
