" A lecture is hardly the term to describe the medium by which Mr. Macdonald conveyed his impressions of the modern battlefield, because in the word ' lecture' there are associations which suggest something cold and unemotional, It's not a lecture—but a fascinating entertainment. In Sydney the instant Dooald Macdonald stepped upon the platform, the cordiality of the reception was beyond doubt—indeed, it seemed tho desire of the enormous audienca to make him welcome, bob only as a depicter of scenes of battle, but as a true Australian, who, by his own sufferings and experiences, had won the right of their personal esteem."--Ari/its. ! There was a very good attendance at the (guards' Club on Thursday evening, when an exceptionally good entertainment was provided, as the following programme will show:—Violin and piano duet, Misses Bobin; songs by Misses Haywood, Stagpoole, Moon, Ninkie, and Murphy, Mr. Hawkins, and Private Bauchope, recitation by Private Bennett, gramaphone by Sergt. A deputation of Hawera public men waited on the Minister oE Lands on Thursday'with reference to the Xpngaboe Valley Koad. The Government, it'was un'derstood, intended to put £I2OO on thej'ubiic Works Estimates as £ for £ subsidy for the road, and ihe County Council objected to this. The deputation pointed out that the Council had already spent several hundreds of pounds in making the road, which would open up a main arterial road leading to Crown lands, and they urged, therefore, that any vote given should ba a straight out vote, and not given as a subsidy on the £ for £ basis. They considered further that £I2OO was not sufficient, and urged that the vote be increased to £2OOO. The matter was discussed at considerable length, and the Minister promised to give it his serious consideration. We are now in the football season, and during the short winter afternoons the welkin' will ring with the loud and vociferous shouts of the barraekers. It behoves all players to be careful of colds, winch they are liable to eatch through getting over-heated in and then cooling off rapidly after their exertions. Whenever the player is attacked by a cone or chill he should seek some remedy, old that has proved its efficacy. We cannot do better than recommend to him Sykes' Cura Cough.
