Eastern files give details of the wreck of the Futawi Mara, which went ashore at Point Kilavite at mid' night on the 17th August. The night was very dark, with heavy wind, rain and squalls. She took ground very easily, close in shore. The disaster was attributed to a strong current carrying the ship out of her course, which should have cleared the land by several miles. The crew and passonIgers, numbering 150, including eight Europeans, lauded aftor several hours. A camp was formed and the stores, mails, and specie were landed two days before the natives discovered the wreck. They offered rice and fruit to the castaways. The steamer Australia turned up the following Thursday and took away the passengers and Inlf the crew, the cap'ain and others staying by the vessel, which hal broken in two. It is iinpossib'e to save a total loss. The ship and cargo were insured for £200,000.
