t DEATH OF SIB JOHN LA WES. 4 FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Received 1,11,50 am. London, August 31. Obituary: Sir John Lawes, the wellknown authority on agricultural matters; a; tat 86. [The late Sir John Bennet Lawes, But, F.R.S., L.L.D., was the son of a clergyman, and was bom at Rothamsted, Hertfordshire, in December, 1814, and educated at Eton and Oxford. Ever since leaving the University his has been unceasingly devoted to the science of chemistry, particularly with the solution of questions affecting practical agriculture. One of his . surliest experiments was in relation . to the effect of bones as a manure on v the land, and a practical outcome of this was the establishment of large works near London for the manufacture of superphosphate of lime, and it is in v connection with this most valuable commodity, which has produced such a revolution in agriculture, that Sir John's name was known all over the world. He was the recipient of many gold medals and awards, and a frequent . contributor to all scientific, agricultural and horticultural journals and societies. The reports of his investigations are also to be found scattered over official dscuments and pamphlets ■ and in the Press. As a reward for his great services he was created a baronet in 1882.]
