VOLUNTEERS.
Tas usual fortnightly inspection parade of the Taranaki Bides was held under Captain Okey, V.D., Lieuts. Cock and Hooker, Sergt.-Major Peacock, Staff Instructor, was also present. The corps was exercised in company movements by the officers, rifh exercise by the sergeants, and physical drill by Sergt.-Major Peacock. A notice of motion made at the last parade, that the hour for parade be 7.30 p.m. during the summer months was put and carried. One of the men appeared in the new uniform, which looked very well, though probably the fine physique of the wearer has something to do with it. The trophy firing will begin about the 20th of September, and will probably continue until the end of March, 1901.
The Guards halve taken on rather a formidable undertaking on Thursday, when it has bean arranged that they proceed by ir h to Waitara, and, after partakiDg of refreshments and putting ia a specimen of drill, they will march back by road, being led out of the town by the Waitara Band. The City Band are to meet the company at Fitzroy and conduct them into town. The success of the outing, of course, depends on the weather, and it is to be hoped that the elements will bs favourable.
