The Daily News. TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1900. TARANAKI SCENERY PRESERVATION SOCIETY.

One of the societies deserving of more general notice and support than is has hitherto received is the laranaki Scenery Preservation Society. The obj?ct which tho3e who were instrumental in forming the Society had in view was the preservation of the natural beauty of various nooks and corners which would be otherwise destroyed, and the planting and baautifying waste places, thus adding not only to the attractions of the district, but materially affecting the climatic conditions. Space will not permit of our giving a history of what the Society has already dono for the district in the manner alluded to above. Most people living in or near New Plymouth arej already familiar therewith. Outside o? New Plymouth, also, the fame of the Society is well kuowD, and the secra-i tary is continually receiving letters] from other parts of the colony, asking | for information regarding the working and organisation of the Society. At the Society's last annual meeting regret was expressed that, notwithstanding the interest excited in other parts of the colony, and the recognition of the value of such an institution in a general sense, the active assistance of those able to forward the obj of the iSodety, within Taranaki, is somewhat licking. With the view of rousing a [iaore active and personal intarest a circular was diaftef, rfhich it h inUmdi.d to send round to persons in various parts of the district, in th'iiope of getting those residing in other ptrtstf the Provincial district to join vil.h New Plymouth in extending the influence of the Society, and preserving the natural beauty tf the particular part of the district in which they reside. There ara many spots where it is simply a desecration to destroy the native ,busb. The Commissioner of Crown Lands and his officers have dono a graai deal to assist tha Society, by reserving from aila pieces of Imd which are of immense valua from » scenic standpoint; hut unless the settlers themselves d •

district materially injured thereby.! We trust all those who are favoured! with a copy of the circular in question, or who can see their way to assist, will lend this very useful Society all the aid they can in its efforts to preserve to Taranaki its name as the Garden of New Zealand.
