The Standards Pretoria correspondent states that the Boer lines extend from Belfast to Crocodile River, covering the entrance to the Bush Veldt where thousands of cattle are located. Botha, with 2000 men, is entrenched. Westward of Dalmantha are 5000 of the enemy, between Belfast and Machadodorp. The Boers exploded a railway line at Raetzes Drift, also south of Newcastle. Eighteen guns have been conveyed to the eastward, through Novitgediot. THE HAMANS KRAAL ENGAGEMENT. DE WET'S RETREAT. LARGE FIND OF AMMUNITION. CASUALTIES. Received 26, 4.45 p.m. London, August 25. The engagement in which Colonel Spreckling was killed took place on a bush veldt, where the density of vegetation prevented the trcops seeing many yards. De Wet, without wagons, followed a bridle path over Magliesberg, southward towards the Free State, Major-General Baden-Powell's previous hard marching, heading De Wet off, is much praised. General Rundle's Yeomanry patrols at Broadwater, Bethlehem district, unearthed a hundred and forty thousand rounds of Mauser ammunition, and twelve Krupp shells. They also arrested several concealed Boers and found a Boer gun an the Transvaal side of the Buffalo River at commando town, Dannhauser, Natal. Casualties—Qaeenslanders: Lieut. Leask, died of wounds; Lance-Corporal Twine, severely wounded; Private Crick, dangerously wounded. At Pienaars River, a Tasmanian, Private Cooper, was severely wounded, and at Hamans Kraal, a South Australian, Private Marshall, died of enteric fever.

General Bulhr is at Leeiwkloof, 6 miles south-west of Dalmamatha. He reports that through a mistake on Thursday evening, two companies of the Liverpool Regiment, advancing in a hollow out of sight of the main body, got surrounded. Ten were killed, 46 wounded, and 32 are missing. Seventeen other casualties occurred at Leeuwkloof. GENERAL FRENCH ON THE MOVE. Amongst the invalided New South Welshmen by the Damascus is Private Campbell, who claims the honor of being tha first of the British to enter 1 Pretoria, He bad a rase with Mr Bennett Burleigh, the well-known war correspondent, for the coveted honour, but the latter gave up, Campbell says, when he saw him (Campbell) meet two Boers whom he thought had captured the New South Welshman, nut the latter disarmed the Boers and got into | the oily. THE COLONIAL CONTINGENTS. ARRIVAL OF INVALIDS AT MELBOURNE. (Received 27,1.25 a.m.) Melbourne, August 26. Wilson, Third Contingent, and Trooper P. T. Shand, Second Con ingent. The} wei e met and welcomed by the Mayor at the port, and by the Organising Committee at Dunedin. Lance-Cor-poral Wilson belongs to Waimate. He was taken with pneumonia at Bradtfort. Trooper Shand belongs to Obristchurch He was attacked by fever a' Bloemfontein. Both speak in high terms of their treatment in the hospital.
