LUNATIC ASYLUM. The annual report of the InspectorGeneral shows that the number of registered insane persons on the 31st December, ISS9, was 2557—males 1512, females 1045. The insane of. the colony are distributed as follows Auckland a total of 456, Christchurch 502, Dunedin (Seacli(l') 635, Hokitika 129, Ntlson 142, Porirna 369, Wellington, 281, Asliburton Hall (private asylum) 43, The proportion of the male insane to tho male population (exclusive of Maoris) is 3.79 per 1000 or 1 in 264; (inclusive of Maoris), 3.60 per 1000 or lin 278. The proportion of the female insane to the female population, exclusive of Mioris, is 2.92 per 1000 or 1 in 342, inclusive of Maoris 2.78 per 1000 or 1 in 360. The proportion of the total insane to the total population, exclusive of Maoris, is 3.38 per 1000 or 1 in 296, inclusive.of Maoris, 3.21 per 1000 or 1 in 311, At Auckland there is apparently sleeping accommodation for 459 patients, but there is only floor space for 407. The number in the Asylum is 467. Thove are therefore 60 patierits in excess of the statutory requirements. At Nelson the apparent accommodation in the common dormitories is for 99 patients, but there is only floor space for 93. The actual number accommodated is 107, bem» fourteen in excess of legal requirements. At Porirua t ! ere appears to be sleeping room for 448 patierits in the common dormitories, but the floor space will only allow of 396 being accommodated, At the Wellington Asylum the floor space is sufficient for 161 patients and 183 are accommodated. The mortality in asylums due to tuberculosis has received much attention of late in B:itain, and there has resulted a consensus of opiniou that special buildings for the isolation of all such cases should be. provided. A special institution for epileptics, idiots and imbeciles is also an urged necessity. The total cost per patient in the different asylums works out as follows: Auckland £23 15s, Christchurch >£26 6s, Searliff £27 13s, Hokitika £26 7s, Nelson £29 17s, Porirua •£25 7s, Wellington £33 Is.
