Lord Methueo overtook Commandant De Wat's rearguard across the * railway, in the direction of Ventersburg, on Sunday, captured a gun, and effectually ahelled the main convoy. Da Wet, daring the night, exploded three waggons, and abandoned some ammnition and thirty exhausted horses.
Steyn is under surveillance in "the Boar camp. Sixty British prifonera have escaped »wl joined Lord Kitchener eight miles eastward of Yenteradorp. Genual Hamilton marched southwest to Blaawbaak, hoping to intercept Da Wat.

TH* ATTEMPT TO RELIEVE ELAND'S RIVER GARRISON. SPLENDID WORE BY AUSTRALIAN BUBHMEN. (Received 16, 1.20 a.m.l London, August 15. General Carrington, with 600 New South Wales Bushmen and six guns, advanced on the sth within two miles of lieut-Colonel Hoare's camp, at Hand's River, but found it impossible to dislodge the Boers, who held a strongly entrenched position, and his force was too small to attempt flanking operation*. The Boers tried to envelop General Carrington's force on both and it was only by the colonials displaying great steadiness and an effec-1 tive artillery fire that a serious situation was prevented. General Garnngtenj retired to Marico, having discovered that the Boers had barred the road to Zeerust.
The Boars captured a small.convoy at Klemfontein, but the colonials repulsed adeterminedattackand regained Zeeruston the 7th. 1 The casualties were 12 wounded and 17 missing. Most of the latter, however, rejoined the force later. The Bushmen showed great coolness in theit first fight, scouting and skirmishing admirably.
