The Boers tried to envelop General Carrington's force on both and it was only by the colonials displaying great steadiness and an effec-1 tive artillery fire that a serious situation was prevented. General Garnngtenj retired to Marico, having discovered that the Boers had barred the road to Zeerust.

The Boars captured a small.convoy at Klemfontein, but the colonials repulsed adeterminedattackand regained Zeeruston the 7th. 1 The casualties were 12 wounded and 17 missing.
