THE BOER SIEGE AT BUND'S RIVER.

GENERAL OARRINGTON'S EFFORTS TO RELIEVE.

(Received 14,9.15 a.m.) London, August 13. During General Can iogton's attempt to relieve the Eland's River garrison, Lieut. Thomas and ten Bushmen wen intercepted by the enemy. Lieut. Thomas is reported to be sate, but his companions are missing. Lieut. Moore, of the Australian Bushmen, is officially mentioned for having rescued a wounded private under heavy fire with |the enemy sniping at him from all sides.

It is estimated that about 2000 Boers were engaged. Finding he could not penetrate with safety to the rescue of the Eland's River garrison, General Oarrington slowly retired, fighting a heavy roarguard action to Marico.

The total losses sustained by the Rhodesian field forces were 15 men killed and missing and six wounded, none seriously.

As the Rhodesians were pursued by a large force, General Oarrington determined to withdraw from Zeeruat. He accomplished the retiring movement, taking 180 waggoni with him laden with supplier, and is concentrating his forces on Mafeking.

LYDENBURG UNDEFENDED. KRUGER RETIRES TO BARBERTON. (Received 14, 9.60 a.m.) London, August 13. It is reported that Lydenburg is-uu-defended, owing to the attitude of Mapoch and his Kaffirs. President Kruger is retiring to Bar* barton, which is the terminus of a branch railway running southwards from the Dalagoa Bay line.

GENERAL BULLER AT ERMELO.

THE BOERS RETREATING.

(Reoeived 16,1.17 a.m.) London, August 13. General Buller has reached Krmelo unopposed.

A number of burghers surrendered, the Boers retreating north-easterly towards the mountains. FRENCH JOINING BULLER. Received 15,1,20 a.m. London, August H, General Ffenoh's scouts have reached Carolina, a few miles from Ermelo.
