THE LICENSING QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Permit me to thank you for - your article on this important question, and to express my satisfaction in finding that in your opinion the people of tills colony are not going to allow retrograde movement, so far as their licensing laws are concerned, without a Severe struggle. May I say that your paper is looked to to lead us in this district on this matter, and that those of us who have the weal of the community at heart hope to be kept well-informed by its means of every movement affecting our liquor laws. Sir, our present advanced position as a people on this matter has cost much, and we must not surrender or retreat, though 'mid the clash of arms in the Transvaal and the trouble in the Bast there is a danger that home questions may not have the attention they should have, and herein lurks real danger. Sir, this is a far wider question than a mere Prohibition cry the character of and the administration of our licensing laws are of paramount import to every citizen; and any changes proposed should be watched most jealously by those who value good order, and who wish New Zealand to be in reality " The Land of the S'ree." •—I am, etc., Solicitude.
