The Daily News. TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1900. REDUCTION IN CHARGES ON GOODS.
In reference to statements that the concessions made by the Railway Department with respect to charging freight by dead weight instead of ship's measurement on the breakwater line not applying to goods for the town, Mr. Connett informs us that while in Wellington, with Mr, Newton King, they were distinctly promised this concession, and that if it is not being allowed some mistake must have been made in the giving or not giving of instructions. Mr, Connett further explains that conceding the Is per ton re-despatching charge was intended as a relief to the country traders, while charging freight by dead weight instead of ship's to measurement was intended as a relief town traders.- As a part of the scheme, the Harbour Board was to reduce the' wharfage from 3s to 2s per ton and the Union Company to make a corresponding reduction in freight on cargo, both the latter benefiting both town and country tradesmen. Mr. Connett points out that for a long time goods con-! signed beyond the town have been oharged dead weight, and that on some classes of goods it was almost cheaper to consign to Inglewood and rail them back to New Plymouth. It was this absurd state of affairs which Messrs. King and Connett went to Wellington to remedy, and which they are satisfied Mr. Ward, the Minister of Railways, assured them should be done.
