CHARGES AGAINST A DETECTIVE.
[rax paw asboclatk ?.] -■ The enquiry into the charges against Chief Detective McGrath exonerates him from the accusation of wilful disrespect. In the other charges investi-gated-by the Commissioner the latter'a finding is not interfered with. < ■ There were thirteen charges against Chief JDeteetive McGrath in the inquiry held by Mr. Poynton, bat one was ' ; attack oat. Some of these had already Wen before the Commissioner, bat the others were fresh. Mr. Poynton upholds the Commissioner's finding that jflbGrath had not shown sufficient resfoct and obedience to the Inspector, •ho that he was to blame in not rt'porting an officer absent from duty. , He finds in two other charges that - McGrath wrote or spoke improperly of tfajß Inspector, but looking at the correspondence which had passed he conskiered there was provocation. In the charge of making insolent and diaree- ' ' pectfol remarks in certain memos, for which the Commissioner bad censured | McGrath, Mr. foynton considers both Commissioner and Inspector were mistaken as to the meaning placed on them, and exonerates the accused. Upon the charge of making a false statement McGrath is acquitted on the ' ground that he believed it to be correct. On the charge of making en•qpmss in an indiscreet manner in a psrffltelsr case he is acquitted, and in two cßpgee of neglect of duty Mr. finds one was a technical if there was a breach, and he exonerates him.
