WINTER DAIRYING IN THE WAIKATO.
Mb. John Sawers, the well-known dairying expert, is at present making a business call at Hew Plymouth while on his return journey to Wellington, after a visit to Auckland and the Waikato districts. In the course of an interview, Mr. Sawers informed us that the dairying industry in the Waikato is in a most prosperous condition, the past season having been a splendid one, and that even at this season of the year the factories were-in full swing, and would be so all through the winter. The fact that the supply of milk is b ing kept up proves that winter dairying is not only a possibility but is also a success. Mr. Sawers thinks that other districts will soon follow the Waikato in this respect, remarking that this is indicated by the fact that the season during which the factories take milk is now much longer than it used to be. In reply to a question as to whether the number of suppliers to the Waikato factories was on the increase, Mr. Sawers replied that this was so, and also that the old suppliers were constantly increasing the size of their dairy herds, resulting in the factories handling correspondingly larger quantities of milk. Mr. Sawers speaks in terms of high praise concerning the quantity, quality, and uniformity of the output from these factories, and expresses the opinion that on the two latter points the New Zealand Dairy Association's product is equal to anything sent from the Taranaki district. Questioned as to how the feed was holding out, Mr. Sawers informed us that the grass was looking as green now as it does here in summer, and there were no signs of any shortage of feed.
