MELBOURNE PEACE AND HUMANITY SOCIETY.
SYMPATHY WITH THE. BOERS. Received G, 9.35 a.m, Melbourne, June 9. A newly-formed Peace and Humanity Society has presented a resolution to the Premiers protesting against the destruction of the self-government and independence of the South African Republic as being unworthy of the mist powerful Empire in the worl.i, xs inconsistent with the principles of democracy, as dangerouH to the prestige and best interests of Great Britain and her colonies, and as a dangeroiis precedent and perilous to human freedom ; that the Society pledges itself to use every legitimate means to promote the liberties of the llepub'ies.
The resolution was the outcome chiefly of irritation at the action of a Committee of the Board of Works recommending the dismi-sal cf two officials who refuted to join their fellowofficers in singing patriotic irODge. Professor llentoul headed the depu-1 tation.
The Premier championed the men, who, no doubt, believed the war unnecessary and unjust,
Professor Rentoul declared that Mr. Rhodes'a companies precipitated the war, backed by military influences and newspapers. The little Republics were only defending their liberties. The charges of the Boers' savagery and Boer ignorance were lies of the military party to foster a military spirit. He had steadily refused to allow the National .Anthem to be sung in his church, because it was not fit to be a bymo. The Rev. Mr. Hopkins, father of the late Oaptam-Surgeon Hopkins, of the Victorian Contingent, made an equally aggressive speech. The House of Brunswick, he contended, was brought to England as the representative of liberty. If the Queen and Prince of Wales forgot the object of their being they understood what should be done to them, he trusted as promptly as the Stuart family were dealt with. He referred to the war as an infamous raid of a National Ohurcb,
tbe recommendation back to the Committee. . % . It is understood no action will taken with regard to the men refining to sing, | 1 i 1 ' i i i i i ' 1
