Saml. J. Serpell, Now Plymouth, May 29th, 1900. [We refer elsewhere to the omissionn pointed out by our correspondent.—Ed. News.] THE RISING GENERATION. TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —I am much shocked to read the remarks of Judgo Edwards at (Jbristchui'ch in your issuo of to-day, and I quite agree with him that gambling is at the present time a greater growing evil than liquor. Having bei.-n in all the larger towns of New Zealand during the last six months, it astonished me very much to see with what apathy the police eeem to treat the matter of street gambling. As the same evil is taking firm rout in New Plymouth, I wish to do my little to exterminate the ovi.l. During my visit here I have on four occasions had a card handed me by two individuals, and soliciting my " patronago" by saying " same prica as the toto, ten pound limit," I da not quite understand their meaning, but I do know the same individuals never work and should be run in us vagrants if the police can only be got to do their duty. 1 am told the same thing has boen going on for two or throe years. Cannot something be done to rid your fair little town of these pests? If not, the time is very near when we shall have much tho same judicial utterance as Judge Edwards made at (Jhristchurch. —I am, etc.,
