FOOTBALL.

The following team has been picked to represent Star 11. against Clifton 11. at Fitzroy, on Thursday:—Hargreaves, V. George, EI veil, A. Lewis, Rock, K. George, Bullofc, 'Webber, Davidson, Bayly, Hook, Eva, Clarke, Sturmey, and Potts, In the Recreation Grounds, on Thursday, Star 111. will meet Tukapa HI., when the former club will be represented by the following:— Alurphy, Pycroft, Richards, Inch, L. Cock, Elder, Bruce, J. Cock, ELoskin, Setford, Rampton, Richards, Sturmey, Brown and Tunbridge. Discussing the forthcoming Northern tour of an Utago representative team, " Forward," of the OUujo Witness, says; —ln the ordinary course the Otago Rugby Union would this year have to send a team as far north as Wellington. The committee of the union has, however, decided that the trip shall be extended so as to include matches also against Auckland and Taranaki, and it is obviously right that this should be so, for although it cannot bo expected that Auckland and Taranaki shall, like Wellington, send teams South next year, it is clear that, unless ihe Otago team goes right North this year, it cannot do so until 1902. As the last team went north in 1890, that would be too long an interval to allow to elapse. It will be much better if it be understood that while the Otago representatives shall visit Wellington every second year they shall visit Auckland every fourth year, similar intervals elapsing: respectively between the Southern trip, of the men from these districts. The question of the interchange of visits between Otago and Taranaki may have to be placed on a different footing, as the Taranaki Union may be unable to maintain a regular system of visits to this part of the oolony. Incidentally to the matter of sending a team North has to be considered the question of the date of the trip. The 0.1i.F.U. Committee his decided that the end of tiie season shall be the time when the team shall go North. That means, I take it, that the team will go about the end of August or beginning of September.
