MAFEKING.
The news cabled through yesterday that the attack on Mafeking was begun on Saturday probably means that the Boers are making a desperate attempt to capture the town before the arrival of the relieving force, it is a bold move on the part of the Boers, as if they can only overcome the garrison they will be able to hold the relieving force at bay from behind the fortifications and under protection of their prisoners; while the commandos that are now dogging the heels of the relieving force under Lieut.-General Sir Archibald Hunter will fasten hard upon the British rear. Whether this will "come off" or not remains to be seen, but if it fails the Boers will find themselves in a most unenviable position, and one that is likely to result in a wholesale capitulation to the British or a flight for life, abandoning guns and all other impedimenta.
