I ASSOCIATION,) [ Dcnedin, May 14, I A. fire at Balclutha yesterday mornjing completely destroyed a block of J wooden buildings in the centre of the I town, comprising McLeod's (draper), Fruist (tobacconist), and the old Criterion Hotel. The fire originated at McLeod's. Fruist's and McLeod's shops were owned by Hallenstein's, and the hotel by Mrs. Mclntyre, of Miller's Flat. Insurances on Hallenstein's are unknown. The old hotel was insured for .£3OO in the Royal Office. John McDonnell, lessee of the latter, saved the bulk of his furniture. He estimates his loss at £BO, as he was uninsured. McLeod's stack was insured for £SOO in the Phoenix. Fruist's stock, valued at £3OO, was uninsured. Woodville, May 14. Two deliberate attempts were made to burn down the English parsonage on Friday evening. The place was fired in two places, but discovered in time. The police are investigating, but they have no clue.
