THE OUTBREAK IN SYDNEY. (Received 10,11.22 p.m.) Sydney, May 10. Oases reported are:—Mrs. Mitchell, Market-street; Alice Carroll, Paddington ; Henry F$ iaa, Balm i'n« Replying to a deputation, Mr. W. J. Lyne, Premier, said the Government may compensate poor people for any damage effected by cleansing operations, but if they did so it would in no sense be an acknowledgment of any legal claim.

NEW ZEALAND'S PRECAUTIONS. Wellington, May 10. The Governor has reported to the Health Officer at Oook Islands that New Zealand is perfectly clean, and that there are no cases of plague in this colony. The Colonial Secretary has instructed the Health Officer at Auckland to communicate with the Health Officer at Tahiti to the same effect. The Hon. J. G. Ward, in his message, added that he did not consider that the people of Tahiti ran any risk of infection from the Ovalau or her cargo, I unless any of the latter came from Sydney. Dunedin, May 10. Dr. Roberts, the Plague Commissioner, finds that the present system of bonds given by passengers released from quarantine does not work satisfactorily. He recommends that the Union Company should give a form, to be retained by each passenger, which, on the signature of a medical man being appended, should be sent to the Inspector of Police at Dunedin. The Inspector should also bo supplied with a list of passengers by each steamer, so that any failing to send in the bond at the end of five days could be looked up. Up to date, 2216 rats have been destroyed at the Gas Works,
