General Hamilton's mounted infantry are straining every nerve to reach Ladybrand first. Generals Botha and De Wet's columns are retreating through the ranges dividing Dewetsdorp from Wepener. A SKIRMISH WITH THE ENEMY. GSNERAL WARREN'S APPOINTMENT. (Received 29, 4.55 p.m.) London, April 28. A patrol at Bethulie had a skirmish with the enemy on the Smithfield Eoad. A private wa"s killed and two captured. At Sir Alfred Milner's request, General Warren has been appointed Military Governor of Griqualand West during the disturbed condition of the districts. JUNCTION OF* BRITISH FORGES. BOERS NARROWLY ESOAPE CAPTURE. London, April 28. Lord Roberts reports that General French, on Friday morning, effected a junction with Generals Hamilton and Dorrien at Thaba N'chu. They have combined with the intention of immediately ousting the enemy from the eastern outlet of the town. General Bundle, on Thursday evening, was eight miles south. General Brabazon's Yeomanry reconnoitred Wepener, and returned to Dewetsdorp. Correspondents' reports show that at Dewetsdorp the Boers altered their course between several British columns, and made a running fight, narrowly escaping capture. The Boers at Thaba N'chu are the rearguard of the main body.
