REPORT OF OUR PRODUOK COMMISSION BR.
[PHB PBUSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, April 13,
Mr. Cameron, Produce Commissioner, writes under date London, March 0: The butter market is steady, rising from !)8s for choicest New Zealand to 100s. It then declined to 965, the average for the month being 98s. The quality of factory continues to give satisfaction, but " milled " has a large proportion very inferior, and is unsatisfactory. The market for cheese is steady and hardening, and prices are so high that they establish a record. Coloured cheese is in smaller supply than white, and for it 62s per cwt is being pail. White fetches 61s. These prices are for finest New Zealand cheese only, and fortunately the bulk of shipments from the colony so far this season come under this heading. Mr. Cameron reports a continued growth for New Zealand dairy produce. He lias received numerous enquiries regarding a shipment of fowls from New Zealand from aiJ parts of the country, and the shipment isi being watched with interest. The market for 1 I mutton is in rather better condition than when he last reported. Prices are scarcely higher, but are firmer. As old stock* are cleared off prices will harden, and if small supplies only come forward they will certainly rise, though not anything like as high a figure as they did last seasoc. Lamb sales are not so numerous as could be desired, but, given seasonable weather, they migbtbeexpectedtorapidly increase. I'ricet ruling are about 4}d to 5d per lb. for Canter--1 bury Jambs; other brands a shade less. Mr. Cameron states that soms she jp recently placed at Smithfield for sale were evidently branded with an ink stamp. Ht hears strong exception is taken to the brand, as when tbe carcases thawed the ink ran and disfigured the meat.
