Mr. Deakin, addressing a meeting of the Society of Arts, admitted that tbc Commonwealth Bill had defects, whicl. were inseparable from compromises, yet he had hopes of the wishes and ambitious pride Australia centred in the measure. The Opposition members of Parliament, as a body, have virtually promised to support the Bill unaltered. The Morning Post urges the Government to resist the amendments and trust the Federal Parliament to takeadvantage of the Imperial Council of Appeal when constituted. There is no prospect of the Bill beiDg introduced before Easter. Received 5,1.35 a.m. Sydney, April 4. Mr. Lyne has received a cable from Mr. Barton confirming the reply of tho F deral delegates. The memorandum is adverse and unyieldicg. Mr. Lyne h«s communicated with the other colonies with a view to joint action.
