FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
1 NARROW ESCAPE OF OPERA HOUSE. [PEBPBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, April 1. At one o'clock this morning a fire was discovered in D. Asher's fancy repository, adjoining the Opera House, in Manners-street. The outbreak happened in a room upstairs, where a large quantity of goods were stored, and ten minutes after the outbreak there was a loud explosion, it is supposed fiorn gas. A portion of the flooring was torn up, a partition knocked out of angle, doors torn from their hinges, and glass blown from the upper windows across the street. Fortunately no persons were injured. The fire almost gutted one portion of the upstairs, and the whole stock was greatly damaged by fire and water. The adjoining premises escaped, though the wall of the Opera House is blackened. The insurances are: Buildings, which are owned by Robert Hannah, £ISOO in the Commercial Union; Asher's stock, £IOOO in the Commercial Union and £IOOO in the Liverpool, London, and Qlobe. The origin of the fire is unknown.
