EDUCATION IN WELLINGTON.
[I'EB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, March 28. The Education Board's Chief Inspector, in his annual report, announces a falling-off in passes, and states that the work in a respectable number of schools is not satisfactory, and in some weak. He attributes this partly to the unsatisfactory selection of pupil 1 teachers and partly to the retention of incompetent teachers. " The tendency of the administration," says Mr. Lee "is to retain weak teachers, some sympathy always arising in personal favour of teachers as against the educational interests of the suffering children—a condition of things which leaves much to be desired." Later. A discussion took place at the Education Board on the subject of excess of salaries. Mr, Robertson moved that the regulations regarding salaries be adhered to, and pointed out that they were paying £I2OO a year excess, and £llOO for redundant teachers, while the attendance was falling oil* rather than increasing. Considerable opposition was shown, sorrie members objecting to bringing down the living wage of teachers. On the whole, the feeling of the Board was against reduction, but eventually it was decided to wait on the Minister in the morning ' and seek his advice on the subject. ! The Nelson Board forwarded a pro- J posal that no one should be allowed to 1 hold more than one scholarship at a j time, and asked for Wellington's ap- , proval. The Board, however, considered it could not prevent .a scholar who had openly won these prizes lidding them. Tne Chairman, in fact, thought they could not legally prevent it. ,
