THE CABLE QUESTION.
A LEADING SYDNEY NEWSPAPER'S OPINION.
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received 23, 10.15 a.m.) Sydney, March 23. The Sydney Morning Herald, in a leading article, says there seems to be an attempt to raise a rivalry between the Pacific and Caps cableß on lines which make the construction of one exclusive of the other, It agrees with the Chamber of Commerce that there is not much fear that the Pacific scheme will be relinquished or any step be taken which will postpone or prevent its realisation. If the reasons for the Pacific cable are strong, those in favour of the Cape Cable are not less favourable. Wo must see that no limit is set to rival enterprise, whether Governmental, private, or foreign. Every increase of cable communication is a gain to Australia. We may be sure tbat if a Pacific cable is desirable the opposition of a Cape cable will not prevent it any more than the existing service will.
