BELL BLOCK.

W V^H (rnOM OUB OWN COBBESPONMOm)^^ , A foktnigut ago a large meeting Was , held under the presidency of Captain Cornwall, and it was determined to form amounted infantry corps at Bell Block. It was pointed out that the district was hardly able to maintain a whole company, and it was suggested i that one of the neighbouring districts should be approached to form a wing, with its own officer. As there seems to be a difficulty about obtaining the requisite number, this suggestion will perhaps now be adopted. A Harvest Festival was held in the Anglican Church on Sunday week. The Church was prettily decorated and the congregations were very large, especially in the evening, when many were unable to find seats. On Monday night an impromptu social was got up to bid good-bye to four young men who are leaving for South Africa with the Fifth Contingent. The Egmont Eoad School was crowded, and Messrs. Longstaff, Street, King, and Locke will know they carry the good wishes of their neighbours. Each of the four was presented by Miss Richardson (on behalf of the settlers) with some mementoes—« silver-mounted pipe and other articles. A most enjoyable evening was spent, and those who took the matter up are to be congratulated on their success. A concert and basket social were to have been held in the Bell Block Hal] last night, but as mwy of those who promised to perform did not pat in an appearance, tho concert was omitted. A largo number of visitors enjoyed thi social and a substantial sum was netted for the hall. The management might Le much improved.
