HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The Hospital and Charitable Aid B >ard met on Monday. Present: Mesars. Corkill (chairman), Oliver. McDonald, Sutton, Dingle, Scott, McOullum, and Lsppar. The House Committee reported having taken steps to increase the lighting of the Board room at the Hospital, used as a lecture room, etc.; that as the loose metal on the road to the Hospital had given great trouble for a long time past, the Mayor had been interviewed with reference to obtaining suitable gravel, and he had promised to ( assist. Another lamp was required on the road opposite the Old Men's Home. The Gas Company's tender for erecting same was .£l6, and for maintenanca and lighting (same as the Borough lamps) £2 per annum. The Committee's action was confirmed, and the necessary authority given for carrying out; the improvements mentioned. The Hawera House Committee reported on some necessary repairs, and i intimated that the gas fittings were completed. They recommended the removal of the glass in the morgue roof; also that the additions to the Hospital should be extended as per original plan. With the exception of the final clause, the report was adopted. The Matron (Miss Tyers) reported that there had been ton admissions, six discharged, and two deaths at Hawera during last month, there being now eiglit patients. Miss P. Kirby's name was ordered to bu placed on the list of applicants for appointment as probationer. j Several cases of relief were dealt' with. I
An account of 4s for cab hire incurred by the police in conveying a patient to the Hospital was passed. Mr. Richmond's request to be allowed to enter into possession and remove earth from the section now in course of being exchanged was granted, the Chairman pointing out that such a course would be beneficial to the Board.
The Chairman reported that the | recently appointed wardsman, who was giving great satisfaction, had given notice to leave. It was decided that the name of the candidate (Billing) who came third on the list should be placed next in order, so that the appointment might be oll'ered to liirn. The Chairman drew attention to the J want of an attendant at the Refuge I owing to there being at least four inI mates in such a state of decrepitude as ■ to render an attendant necessary, In reply to Mr. Sutton, he further stated | I that it would be better that inmates of I I this class should be housed in a cottage! or separate wing. The members of the Board proceeded j to the Hospital in the afternoon and inspected the proposed site for the new refuge. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the Board on April 3rd to consider and decide as to the [ site and plans for the building. The Board adjourned.
