AUCKLAND NEWS.

[PUB PBES3 ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, March 19. The Moana arrived from Sydney last evening, and left at 1.30 p.m. to-day for way-ports and San Francisco. There were no passengers for Auckland, On account of the plague regulations, the vessel did not berth beside the wharf, her passengers being taken off in a ferry steamer, and her cargo Vming transferred from the hulks. She had a large list of passengers fram Sydney. A good number joined here. Many steerage passengers by the Mararoa refused to pay the usual charge of 3s "per day demanded from steerage passengers during the period of quarantine, although notified of the charge before leaving Sydney. Their contention was that the expense should devolve upon the Government. Most of the passengers, however, did pay the charge, while the baggage of the remainder was detained until the money was paid.

The Westralia arrived from Sydney early this morning, and proceeded down to Motuiti shortly after 8 a.m. to undergo quarantine. She had no passengers for the South,. A six-roomed house and contents at Goromandel, owned and occupied by Jos. Barker, was burned down. It was insured for .£l5O iu the Northern.

Mr. J. J. Holland is out for the City to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. W. Urowther. Mr. 11. Hobbs also contemplates standing. The Liberal Association meets to select t a candidate,
