ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
[PER PBESS ASSOCIATION^ Chbistohukch, March 17. St. Patrick's Day was honoured by wearing the shamrock and green ribbon and by the closing of the banks and Government offices, but there was no general demonstration. A number of loyal Irishmen sent the following telegram to the Governor, with a request to cable it on to the I Queen;—" Canterbury Irishmen thank your Majesty for the prominence given to our national emblem in appreciation of our countrymen's bravery in Africa, and your sacrifice in visiting Ireland, May God prolong your reign." . Auckland, March 17. i St. Patrick's Day was celebrated with great eclat. The children's procession was the largest ever held. The Hibernian Society's sports were well attended in the Domain, and masses were celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral by the Very Rev. Dean O'Reilly and at the other Catholic city and : suburban churches. The native regatta at Ngaruawahia was largely attended.
