THE QUESTION OF THE CABLES.
[PEB PEESS ASSOCIATION.J (Received G, 9.'10 a.m.) Sydney, March 6. The Chamber of Commerce has discussed the rival cables, and a resolution was moved that while welcoming the laying of a Cape cable it desired to protest against New South Wales breaking faith with original arrangements of other colonies with regard to the Pacific cable. Some of the members objected to the resolution being sprung on the meeting and warmly supported the Cape cable. From a business point of view they considered the Eastern Extension Company's proposal was one that the Government might fairly accept, and that they were making a good deal. Mr. Warren, who was present, pointed out the value to the Empire of the Cape route for strategical purposes, a fact recognised by the Admiralty, Mr. Lark, Canadian Commissioner, stroDgly condemned as a breach of faith jthe action of New South Wales and Victoria in changing their policy without consulting the other colonics involved in the Pacific scheme. It was now a question of a Pacific sc'utme or a continuance of the present monopoly. If the Pacific schime died this ye*r the Canadian Government wa3 not for a few years to come g'ling to the c-xpensa it had been put to already, and was not going to less a las gs sam annually on a routs for the bent fit of Australian trader?.
