A SECRET DESPATCH. IMPORTANT CABLE FROM THE HON. J. CHAMBERLAIN. SPECULATION AS TO ITS CONTENTS. PROBABLE TROUBLE WITH RUSSIA. |PBB PBB3S ASSOCIATION.J (Received 1, 11 p. m .) Sydney, March 1. A despatch of great importance has been received by the various Governments from the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies. The greatest secrecy as to the contents is preserved. Speculation is rife. A suggestion has been made that the Imperial authorities wish to send the captured Boer commandant Cronje and his forces to Australi a. Another view of the despatch is that trouble has arisen between Great Britain and Russia, Mr, McLean, the Premier of Victoria, went so far as to say that the publication of the contents of Mr. Chamberlain's despatch might create alarm. It is believed that the colonies will be asked for more troops for South Africa, so that in the event of trouble with another Power the Imperial forces will be available for service elsewhere, (Received 2,1.18 a.m.) Melbourne, March 1. Mr. McLean wired Mr. W. J. Lyne suggesting that he should make a definite offer of more troops, This is presumably the outcome of Mr. Chamberlain's despatch.
