THE LATE GENERAL LAWTON.
The Americans have just lost in the Philippines a grent soldier. Major(Jeiier.'l law ton, having returned from his arduous arid successful campaign in Northern Luzon, was shot through the he.' rc while assisting one of his wounded Qlficers on the fi. ng line in a little engagement only fourteen nn'es out of i Manila He was always on the firing line or iu adr nee of it. An utterly fearless ma.i, hardened by seivice in our civil war, by notable campaigas against our jndians, and by the cam paign at Santiago, his towering figure (6ft 3in), topped with a big white helmet was always leading his men, and it is a wonder that he was not shot long ago. He was ati reless fighter. The cruel Apache Indians, wh'i admired ■ him, gave hinj. the name of " Man- ' Who-Gets-up-in-the-Night-to-Figat." He was also a man of excellent judg* | meat, and he well know what our . polio-' in the islands should be after • the eid of what he called " this accursed w;>r.' He had done the greater part of the fighting in Luzon, and if the incompetent Otis, comfortably housed in ' Manil i, had not repeatedly restrained ■ him at critical moments before tho recent rainy season, he would then have 1 crushed Aguinaldo's forces and captured Aguinaldo himself lie chafed under the rule of OtjS, ai d the latter J was compelled some weeks ago, under the jv'ministration of the new Secretary of War, give him a free hand. It is a great loss to the country, and to the poor widow and Uer childrua it> Ivjuniia, r i
l'or whom Cor .'ess and citizen cent.vibuters are now making provision because Law ton left scarcely anything for them except his noble i\ cord. fs'.Z. Times.
