THE RECENT FIGHTING AT RENSBURG.
A GALLANT OFFICER KIIXED. (Received 10,1.45 p.m.) London, February 15. Colonel Charles Coningham, commanding the Second Battalion Worces ter Rogiment, was killed in the recent fighting at Rensburg, UALLANTRY OF TUB NEW ZKALANDEIIS. (Received 16, 9.30 a.m.) ! Sydney, February 16. I Referring to the fighting at Rons-1 burg, the Cape Times publishes a telegram stating that the distinguishing feature of the skirmish on Monday was the pluck and indomitable oourage of Captain l£adocl?s and the New Zealanders. On Monday morning the enemy commenced an open and desultory fire on the Yorkshire Regiment and New Zealanders, whs had a picket on tho hills north of Slirjgersfontcin. The fire continued with increasing vehemence until it was one continuous roar, preventing our men from evin looking out. Under cover of their lirn a number of Boers, about 2QO strong, were creeping up the hill and taking advantage of every piece of cover. Oapt'iin Orr, of tho Yorkshires, fell badly wounded and a few of his men ilso fell. Captain Madocks, hearing the heavy firing on the Yorkshire side, rushed up and found the men waver-' it g. He immediately gave the order fix b;>yonots and charge. The efl'ect ivas magical. Tho Yorkshires rushed xirward. The Boers, however, did not vait for the cold steel, but fled in disriier, falling as they ran to the splen!id shooting of our men.
