TO BE WITHDRAWN FEBRUARY 20TH.
On Tuesday, February 20th, tho London Times will permanently withdraw its " Encyclopaedia Britannica" proposition. The time which brings to an end the opportunity for securing the full set of this great reference library, on payments of one guinea a month, offered to residents of New Zealand, was necessarily limited, as announced when the proposition was first published. The 'J'mv.s regrets that it must close an enterprise which proved to be mutually beneficial in a marked degree, but with regret comes a feeling of satisfaction that it has been able to further the cause of education by sending to so many homes the twenty-five volumes of what is acknowledged to be the broadest and greatest literary work of the century—-the l: Encyclopedia Britannica," From first to last nothing but words of approval and encouragement has been heard regarding the educational enterprise forwarded by the Times, and letters of commendation from all classes of society have, been received. Tuesday, February ,20th, is the last day on which the Encyclopajdia Britannica can be secured on the liberal terms embodied in the offer. It is needless to enlarge on the merits and value of the Britannica. The work is too well known, it has been the standard reference library for too many years to require any flamboyant praise. There is this to say, however, the Times has made Encyclopaedia Britannica household words, for prior to the day the Encyclopaedia proposition was announced the work was to be found only in the libraries of the rich classes, colleges and schools. To-day it is, in the homes of many hundreds of residents of New Zealand, and its perusal there mngt provo a continual squrce of pleasure and profit to all members of the household.
