FIRE ON THE S.S. AOTEA.
MACHINERY SUSTAINS A GOOD DEAL OF DAMAGE. [PKtt PKESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, February 12. The Aotea, which sailed for London yesterday morning, returned this morning. A iire broke out in the engine-room, but was extinguished before reaching the Heads. The fire started on the top of the starboard boiler. Some woodwork was burned, but the machinery is not hurt, and the fire was well away from the cargo. Repairs will probably cost some hundreds and take three or four davs. Later. About noon yesterday a thin line of smoke was observed on the Aotea, coming up near the funnel. The fire was suppressed before any mischief was done, but at 8 p.m. heavy columns of smoke suddenly shot up, and the fire was found to have broken out again in exactly the same place. This time it took over an hour's hard and dangerous work to got it under. The forced draught engine was considerably damaged, the metal being melted out of the bearings, and the shaft and plates were buckled. .
