The War Office confirms the report that General Buller's army had crowed the Tugela River. The General hold* a good position, and is now advancing. THE GENERAIBJTRATEBY. The Boers, imagining he actually intended to cross at both places, claim a victory. At Nolan's Drift, where the actual crossing took plac*. the cannonading it described as the fiercest of the war General Buller, before .starting, obtained from Durban 100 additional stretcher-bearers.

The War Office has been informed .hat General Buller crossed the Tugela on Monday, and is now advancing towards Ladysmitb. The Boers, at 11 o'clock, sent shells itnong the infantry, who retired at noon. Meanwhile General Buller made a rigorous attack on our extreme right. The Engineers constructed a pontoon januon, hidden among the trees on the | Swartzkop, and bombarded the Boar position heavily. j The infantry then crossed, completely surprising the Boers and capturing the Krantskloof Hill, belonging to the Brakfontein range. The operations were excellently placed. i The British resumed the bombard* uient on Tuesday morning. * Tue enorny worked a disappearing gun on the Doorukloof heights, to the northeastward of the British. The gun axploded its magazine, and the gun itself was disabled till a late hour. Intermittent musketry fire was meanwhile maintained. The Boers, in the afternoon, made a ■leterminod effort to recapture the hill, out British reinforcements, advancing with cheers, repulsed the enemy. The British then advanced along the ridge.
