Trains will leave for the breakwater to-day, connecting with steamer mentioned below, as follow: —6 a.m., Gairloch (from north); 9.30 p.m., Gairloch (for north). The Railway Department have extended the excursion tickets, in connection with the departure of the Wanganui Contingent, uy.til Monday, the 12th instant. The Inglewood School Committee, at their meeting on Monday last, decided that their vote for the vacant seats on the Education Board should be given to Messrs. Fault and Kennedy. The Agent-General cabled from London on Wednesday that there is nothing fresh from the seat of war. A very mean trick was played on a passenger by the mail train on Tuesday evening. He was leaning out of a window while at Sentry Hill station, and as the train moved off some miscreant at the end of the platform made a dash at his hat and knocked it off, thus leaving the owner hatless and considerably irate. Whether the act was that of a thief or an idiot could not be ascertained, but in either case passengers should be protected from this sort of thing. The secretary of the Taranaki Freezing Works Company, Ld., Mr. J. S. McKellar, advises us that the s.s. Papanui will be the next steamer carrying dairy produce; leaving Wellington for London on February 24th. The closing day at the Moturoa Works will be Thursday, 15th instant, at 3 p.m. Colonel Fox has written to the Contingent Committee at Christchurch withdrawing his offer to go in command of any contingent, as no reply has been received to his oifer of his services. He adds that he has received scant courtesy at the hands of the Government. The Canterbury Jockey Club has given £2OO to the War Fund. One of the men who is to be put through horsemanship and shooting test by the Wellington selection committee is an M.A. schoolmaster, boundary rider, surveyors' assistant, tennis champion, ride shot, gymnast, pugilist, footballer, cheese player, etc. Although the period allowed officers and of the Police Force to decide whether they would come under the Police Provident Act will not expire till the end of the present moui.h, only thirteen members have failed to take advantage of the benefits of the new system. The New South Wales stock returns for the past year show a decrease of 5,500,000 sheep and 100,000 cattle as compared with the previous year. The decrease is mainly owing to drought. To prevent disappointment to intending subscribers for The Tunes' " Encyclopedia Britannica," Mr. T. Avery advises immediate application for copies, as he has received notification that the offer for New Zealand will close not later than February 20th, or sooner if the number set apart lor the colony is disposed of.
