THE TIMES" (LONDON) OFFERS team in the TO RESIDENTS OF NEW ZEALAND.

• _ plan adopted by The Times (London) in distributing a limited number of tha" Encyclopedia Britannica" in Great Britain at less than half price, and on easy terms of payment, is now temporarily extended to residents of New Zealand. , Thesensatjou of the bookselling season in London, the remarkable offer of The lMM*reptinto{the " Encyclopedia Britamijca " (9th edition), is already known to residents in New Zealand who read: The Times. . No fewer than 15,000 copies of the massive were • printed, but applications were received in rapid succession for more than 20,000. , 1 idespread disappointment was occasioned by the' enforced reftisal of a great Dumber of orders, and residents in New Zealand were, owing to the delay in communicating with London, peculiarly .unfortunate in this respect. i What Tne Times did for residents in England it now proposes to do for residents fin. New Zealand. Arrangements have been made fora limited number of copies for ; distribution in New Zealand. The price and, terms upon which these copies maybe ' oblainedarestated in.detail below, iand immediate application should be made by, petsoDß who desire to avail themselves of this extraordinary opportunity. ' <. . The price at which the work is offered is in itself a phenomenal one, and the 'conditions of sale are such as to materially enhance the advantages presented by the arrangement. The briefest statement of these conditions will be sufficient. Below will be found a full statement of the plan of payments, also the further details regarding the various styles of binding, &c. The subscriber who promptly sends his application, accompanied by a preliminary payment of £1 Is, has no further payment to make until the 25 volumes are delivered to him all in one package; he is not bothered with odd volumes; the splendid work i in its entirety is at his disposal when but one payment has been made. • The "Encyclopaedia Britannica" (Ninth Edition) consists of 2*l volumes of 850 pages each, and of a 25th volume containing an elaborate index to the whole and the detailed list of contributors. The volumes are 11J inches in height, !)A inches in depth, and 2£ inches in thickness. The full Morocco and Half Morocco bindings are of genuine morocco goat-skins, sumach-tanned. This leather, clear in colour, elastic and toft, yet firm and fine in grain and texture, "resists any other leather." (" Ency. Brit.," vol. xiv., p 538.) The Color of the Half Morocco is a deep maroon, relieved by the gold stamping on the back. The Full Morocco binding is of high-class leather, dark green in color, with rolled gold edges, and the Royal Arms stamped in gold on the side. In addition to the thirty million words which occupy the 22,000 pages, the ■J-Sncyclopaadia" contains 338 full-page {/lates and 671 maps and plans. There are "6ver 8000 other illustrations. For the MS. alone a sum ot more than £60,000 was paid to the 1100 contributors, and the printing, illustrating, and binding, which are of the highest quality, entail a so much greater expenditure that the "Encyclopajdia" is unquestionably the most costly production ever offered to the public. The Ninth Edition of the " Encyclopedia Britannica" is the standard national wqrk of reference. It was not until 1889 that it was completed, although the first volume was published in 1875, and the twelth volume—half-way on the road—appeared in 1881. The elaboration with which the articles were written, the scrupulous care with which they w«;e revised, the minute labor expended in bringing the typography and the illustration of the volumes to the highest point of accuracy, all combined to make haste impossible. No new addition has yet been commenced, and, if one should be undertaken, fourteen and fifteen years would elapse before it could be completed. Bat the value of snch a work is quite unaffected by the chances of the moment. It has none of the perishability of an annual, because its editors were wise enough not to attempt to give it the advantages and disadvantages of such a work. The publishers of the "Encyclopedia Britannica" formerly sold the work at £37 a set in cloth binding. The persons who wanted the book more than they wanted £37 bought it at that price. But a greater number who wanted it could not afford to give that mnch for it, and did without it. They now have the opportunity of baying Tie Timet reprint for 17 Guineas in monthly instalments, and The Times reprint is in every respect the same as the copies already sold at the higher price; it ia what book sellers call a new impression, not a changed edition. There has been no condensation, no no omission. Every word, every illustration, every map, every dement of value is preserved intact, the paper is as good, the press-work is as good; there is not the most minute cheapening of the product to the offset against the remarkable elimination of the price. MAKING

IbF such a book / entails as muoh labour aa tija building of a cathedral, and tn one respect it may better be oompared'-to the persevering assemblage of a great mosaic. Hcrschel estimated, after elaborate calculations, that the workers on the Vatican mosaics must have distinguished 30,000 different effects of colour, This almost incredible minuteness la paralleled by the diligence required for the preparation of a work which deals with all branches of human knowledge. In the mecbanioil production of the "Encyclopedia Britannica" tho assiduity Of the mosaic worker is again suggested, Type-setting—in itself a most tedious process—is complicated by tho necessity for careful revision; the vagaries of composters survive repeated correction; and, on the other hand, authors tkemselvea are btver so fertile ea wlwa thy margin of a proo£«#heet tempts the pen, BSniNG OF SItOOO PAGES of tin " Encyclopedia Britannica 11 wn«, iu fast, acne three tlmw over, for esolalons tnd alteration* mode the total type-setting equivedent to 67,000 pages, Just as tho ttwent Cathedral of St. Paul's was reared upon an old subterranean church, which Utt hidden beneath its floor) to the 26 volumes of the " Encyclopedia Britannica" tttta built upon ft substructure of Si other volumes which never saw tho lights No statement could batter illustrato tho lavish expenditure vthkin made the "Sdayclopwdia Uritftnnica"as great a book bs it is; and although the orice at whieh tM WdA was originally published proved to many persons a prohibitive ona, it was bQ more than common prudence demanded, flow that The liMti (London) is enabled to distribute AT A VERY MUCH JUW&ft PRICE / the limited number of sets secured for New Zealand, the "EhcycloDsedia Britannica' "Wtil at once find its way to the bookshelves of many persons who have hitherto been compelled to go to clubs end libraries in order to consult its pages. It is one of tho prerogatives or a newspaper to give such incidents of its operation an especial effectiveness, and the "Encyclopedia Britannica" is so dignified an example of the national love of letters that tho prospect of its increased popularity '"to be regarded with no little satisfaction. - i'he only thing that can deprive anyone cf his share in the benefits of the Special enterprise fi NEGLECTING TO APPLY IN TIME, for so long as they last these magnificent sets will go to the first who apply.
