IDE C. iUSG TIC. Some short Lime ago, ia these "notes" I recommended pig-brooders to turn their attention to the Berkshire-Tam-worth cross as the best pig for the bacon industry, In consideration of this fact it is well to know what others think in connection with the subject. Mr. \V. Hutfcon, a leading Victorian bacon manufacturer, in reply to the question, "Is there any particular treed that you find gives better results than others ? " recently said : " The Berkshire has held the sway for years, but the modern pure-bred Berkshire carries rather tio great a quantity of fat in proportion to lean. The first cross 1 between Tamworth and Berkshires —i.e, the progony of pure Tam ■ worth hours and pure Berkshire sowsare now giving vi ry good results for bacon purposes, The fat and lean aro more evenly proportioned, and this pleases the consumer, Tt;o TamworthBerkshira cross produces a vigorous, quick-thriving pig that fattens quickly tor baconers."
Mr. Ritchie, a Victorian dairy-far-mer, speaking of tho great merits of the raiawuith Uarbshiie cro?s to a representative of the Meblowne Age, snid: " Since we procured a Tamworth boar wa hive got over our troubles in pigbreeding, and siiico thqu have not .suffered any Lsses. BUTTHr, MARKKTS. - j The cable infonnation,-froin London is not of tho brightest. Anticipations with respect to high prices will be hardly realised ; however, wo shall have ' to bo content with 08s if wo cannot get; inoro. Cheese, on the other hand, is in l demand, and quoted at »!is to 60s; and: there can ba no Joubt that this season ' ihi" chew»c factories ace going to have, •' a good innings," As proof of tiio ononnSiis amount of butter imported into the United Kingdom, the quantity imported according to tho returns fur- ! nished by the British .Board of Trade for tho first ei.'jht months of the year. 1809 were as follows : Hwoden,' 178,263 cwt. ; Denmark, 1,025,#30 cwt.; German v, 33,703 cwt,; Hoi-' land, 200,540 cwt.; France, 248,806; cwt.; "United States, 115,766 cwt,; i Victoria, 102,508 cwt.; New South| Wales, 22,797 cwt.; New Zealand, i 87,339 cwt.; Canada, 117,869 cwt.; other countries, 186,517 cwt. Total, 2,320,083 cwt. This enormous quantity represents a value of nearly a tolerably largo account for butter, and, important as oar industry maybe to the colony, it is infinitesimally small as compared with the whole. Tho above does not include tho whole, for there is yet to be accounted for Great Britain's local production, which is said to be equal to any three other countries imported.
