A STEAMER AGROUND.
SUFFERINGS OF THE CREW. [PKB PEESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received 8,1.8 a.m.J Townsville, January 7. The second mate and five of the crew of the steamer Queen Christian, from Shanghai to Newcastle, in ballast, arrived yesterday morning. They report that the steamer went aground on the Lukon Reef, 230 miles beyond the Barrier Reef, on December 23rd, during a hurricane. The vessel presents every appearance of becoming a total wreck, there being ave feet of -water in her forehold. Signals of distress failing to attract attention, the six men left in the gig on the morning of New Year's Day, and reached Townsville in three and a half days. Twenty-six men remained on the vessel. A steamer leaves for the scene of the wreck in the morning. On the passage from the wreck of the Christian, a strong wind and high sea were met with during the first two days, the men being drenched. For the last part of the voyage they lmd to depend on their oars, and arrived in a very exhausted condition.
