DAIRY ZONING SCHEME
SUBMISSION TO MINISTER Suppliers’ Lost Liberty Gisborne, July 1. A warning from one of its own (supporters that the Government might meet its downfall as a resuit of the dairy zoning scheme was iconveyjed to the Minister of Agriculture, Htf*. W. Lee Martin, at Te A'raroa to-day. The speaker w’as Mr R. T. Kohere, who extended a welcome to the Minister on behalf of the local branch of the Labour Party. Speaking of zoning, Mr Kohere said nhere were good points in the scheme, but it could be put to unwise use and become a stumbling I|Jock to deprive people of their liberty to sell their produce on the best market. He atked that the people should be given a phoice between two companies, so as to keep alive the healthy spirit of competition. Zoning might yet be the cause of the downfall of the Labour Government.
The Minister said zoning was not his iGovernment’s measure. It had beeft inherited from a former Government. It was brought in to eliminate unnecessary traffic on the highway, to stop pirating and to improve the quality of cream. 11l regard to the liberty of the subject; the Minister held that all Statues interfered with everybody. He wished that zoning should be given a chance. The system would be ‘reviewed as time went on.
