HOSPITAL OUTBREAK
Diphtheria At Auckland' Press Association—Copyright. Auckland, July 2. Owing to an outbreak of diphtheria in ward 28 at the Auckland Hospital it has been found necessary to close the ward, and it will remain closed until it is regarded as clear from any possible infection. The first knowledge of the presence of the complaint in the ward was gained when a nurse complained of a sore throat. Her throat was immediately swabbed and revealed a positive case of diphtheria. The nurse was immediately removed from the ward, and was placed in isolation. The medical superintendent, Dr. Craven, stated that in accordance with the unusual custom all nurses and patients in the ward were immediately swabbed and the ward was closed. As a result of the swabbing it was revealed that another nurse showed positive traces of the disease and she was removed to the isolation block. Routine swabbing was Carried out and on each of the second and third occasions a patient returned a positive swab and both were immediately isolated. Dr. Craven added that all cases were very mild. Every precaution was being observed.
