FROM SMUGGLERS TO SPRINGBOKS
“New Zea’and Free Lance.” From smugglers to Springboks, is a wide rang# of letterpress and pictorial topics in this week’s issue of the “New Zealand Free Lance.” Though comparatively few people are aware of it, there is smuggling in certain parts of New Zealand even to-day, and it is of a type which has nothing to do with arrivals of vessels from overseas. It is carried on in certain parts of New Zealand. There is a special article explaining it in the “New Zealand Free Lance.” The Springboks’ recent defeat by New South Wales and their subsequent victory over Australia add point to an article written specially by Mr W. McKenzie (“Off-side Mac”), a famous New Zealand player of other days,-after he had seen them in action in Melbourne. His brother, Mr N. A. McKenzie, writes about certain of the Springboks New Zealand engagements. Another famous sportsman who writes for the “New Zealand Free Lance” is Mr C. G. Macartney, Australian Test cricketer of long experience. In this week’s contribution he touches on certain aspects of New Zealand’s cricket Test with England, at Lord’s. There are many other very interesting articles. The pictorial section of the paper is strong, as usual. There are delightful human touches in a series of pictures of the Duke of Windsor’s wedding. The opening of the new air service between Wellington and Auckland is illustrated. Among the many other fine pictures is a fresh series of illustrations of the Springbok footballers in action. The social and other departments of the paper are well up to -the high standard* of the “New Zealand Free Lance.’
